Referral of patients with breast abnormalities to TBH

As from 3rd May 2021, the Breast Surgery Unit at Tygerberg Hospital will require that all outpatient referrals to our Unit are made via the Vula App. (In-patient and urgent referrals should please go to the registrar on call for Breast and Endocrine Surgery.)

Our aim is to assess and manage our patients more quickly, more efficiently and effectively, with better clinical outcomes. The VULA Medical Referral App is very easy to download and use, and you are welcome to ask us for assistance if necessary. Amongst other benefits, the VULA Medical Referral System allows us to:

· Quickly assess whether or not a referral is appropriate or if it should be referred to another discipline / service.

· Communicate with doctors via a chat function

· Archive all VULA referrals between our doctors & referring doctors to:

o Quantify the number of referrals we receive with accurate data on response times & the management of referrals/consults to ''specialization".

o Audit & reduce response times to requests for in-hospital assessments

o Review the decisions made by our registrars & consultants to in order to provide a better service to all our patients in our setting of limited resources.

Importantly, the VULA Referral System is strongly endorsed by the National Department of Health for ALL referrals.
